Unlike\nmany fantasy stories, <em>A Taste of Honey<\/em> takes place in a time of peace. A\nDalucan delegation is visiting Olorum, and they bring experienced soldiers to\nhelp train the Olorumi army in their advanced techniques. It is through this\nvisiting delegation that Aqib meets Lucrio, a handsome Dalucan soldier, and is\nswept into a whirlwind romance, despite society and his family\u2019s disapproval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read <em>A Taste of\nHoney<\/em> immediately after completing Rivers Solomon\u2019s <em>The Deep<\/em> and\nboth stories have a lyrical style of writing (on different ends of the\nspectrum) that isn\u2019t always present in fantasy. Wilson\u2019s style of writing is\nevocative, and uses dialectic speech and narrative to create a vivid world and\ncharacters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would be lying if I\nsaid that I didn\u2019t find this novella hard to read at times. It was not\nnecessarily from the events of the story (though there is familial violence against\nAqib due to his relationship with Lucrio), but rather the writing style and narrative\nstructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I had to get used\nto the unfamiliar dialects used in the book, and then I had to deal with the\nnon-linear timeline. If you have read any of my other reviews, you probably\nknow that I don\u2019t like stories with extensive flashbacks, or stories that flit\nback and forth in time. <em>A Taste of Honey<\/em> doesn\u2019t follow a strictly\nlinear timeline, but moves forward and backward through time throughout the\nentire book. Wilson does clearly indicate at every chapter where this piece of\nthe story is taking place in time; however, I still found myself growing\nfrustrated with the constant need to reacclimate to the different points of\ntime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of my opinions\nabout the non-linear narrative structure, Wilson creates a vivid and interesting\nworld with deep connections between characters, despite the limited length of\nthe book. I ached for Aqib and Lucrio. I worried endlessly about Aqib\u2019s\ndecision and it\u2019s consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was worried that <em>A\nTaste of Honey<\/em> was going to end in\u2026not necessarily tragedy, but\u2026unfulfilled\npromise? However, the twist of an ending, brought the story back to a happy and\nfulfilling end to Aqib\u2019s story \u2013 an ending that puts aside any of Aqib\u2019s\ndoubts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would love to read more\nabout Aqib and Lucrio. How do they continue to develop their relationship\nbeyond it\u2019s whirlwind start? How does middle age suit them?
