A really\ninteresting concept to base a novella on. While living idyllic and peaceful\nlives in the deepest parts of the sea, Rivers Solomon\u2019s creations are not your\nclamshell bra wearing mermaid. Descended from humans, humanlike in appearance\nand emotion, but startlingly creepy creature of the deep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Deep<\/em> follows Yetu, a young mermaid, and the historian\nfor her people. She holds the memories of her people\u2019s traumatic history so\nthat the rest of her society can live in blissful ignorance. Carrying and being\ncarried by these memories is physically and emotionally painful for Yetu. So,\nwhen the opportunity arises, Yetu flees to the surface to escape the memories\nand expectations of her people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Deep<\/em> is an introspective book. I felt\ndisconnected from this book for quit a lot of it. I think I expected it to be\ndifferent than it was. This isn\u2019t to say that it wasn\u2019t a good story or wasn\u2019t\nwell written. This just wasn\u2019t the story for me. <em>The Deep<\/em> is about Yetu\u2019s emotional and psychological journey\nand how it relates to her understanding of her role amongst her people and\ntheir history. It is just not a subject that is typically within my wheelhouse.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Yetu\u2019s time on the surface, away from\nher people and the pressures she is under, she meets a human woman. A human\nwoman who finds Yetu as interesting as Yetu finds her. This romantic arc is\nshort and sweet and the book concludes on a happy ending. Yetu, her people, and\nher love interest are all happy in the end, which is always nice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While not the book for me <em>The Deep<\/em> was\nstill worth the time to read at only 167 pages.
